Religion in Second Life

Who’d a thunk it?

I just read a post on ldsWebguy’s blog about Mormons in Second Life, an online virtual-reality world where users create avatars and live virtual lives. Basically, a group of LDS users of Second Life have created a visitors center, meeting house, and a few other things to introduce others to the gospel.

I’m not sure that I agree with it, but it’s interesting all the same.

Frankly, I don’t know whether to think this is sacrilegious or just plan ingenious. I’m rather opposed to the whole Second Life deal in the first place. It can’t help strengthen society much if users are trading quality social time with real people for virtual time with real avatars. (Robert Putnam’s influence is apparent in my views on the matter.) At least sites like facebook preserve the physical identity of their users, without turning them entirely into impersonal entities.
